My research interests are mainly in understanding the ways in which education and education policy can advance equity and social justice. Most of my teaching is in pedagogical studies, research methodologies and methods, and academic writing. Please see the drop-down menu for examples of teaching, publications, and presentations.
Among other funding bodies, my research has been funded by ArtsEqual research initiative (Strategic Research Council/Academy of Finland), Fulbright Finland Foundation, American-Scandinavian Foundation, Finnish Cultural Foundation, and Finnish Concordia Foundation for Women in Academia.

I am Dr. Sanna Kivijärvi, a researcher and teacher at the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, Finland. I am also affiliated with the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki, where I teach in the Creativity and Arts in Social and Health care master's program.
My academic interests are interdisciplinary, combining music education, education policy and sociology of the arts. I have published several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on accessibility, equity and other policy issues in Finnish music education system and beyond. I also serve as a reviewer and board member for academic journals, conferences and funding bodies.
At the Sibelius Academy and Metropolia University, I teach students at undergraduate, master's and doctoral level in pedagogical courses, such as basics of music teaching and special education in the arts, as well as research seminars and methodology courses, including theses' supervision. I frequently hold visiting lectures and present papers in international and domestic conferences in education and policy research, and the related fields.
Half of my professional life takes place in the USA: I am a co-director at Just Accessible Music, a music school and research centre located in New York City and in Connecticut, USA. I have also worked as a Fulbright research fellow at Teachers College, Columbia University and as a visiting research scholar at Steinhardt School of New York University.
Here's briefly about my work in Finnish and in Swedish.
